Taiga
The Taiga is the largest biome. It ranges across the the Northern part of North America and Eurasia Continent. It is located just south of the tundra in cities like Anchorage, Alaska and Ontario, Canada. Living in taiga can be a very cold and lonely place. Not very many people live here because of the harsh cold winters. However, it is not always cold. In the summer months highs will climb up to around seventy degrees. Most of the precipitation the taiga receives comes in the form of rain during the short summer. There are really only two season in the taiga. Spring and Autumn are so short you do even realize its there.
Animals
America Black Bear- The American black bear is a fierce predator. It can reach speeds of twenty-five miles per hour. For weighing in up to six hundred pounds that is extremely fast. The black bear is well adapted for for the cold winters of the taiga. It has many layers of long shaggy fur that keeps in warm even in the harsh conditions. The black bear will eat just about anything, but about seventy-five percent of its diet contains of plants and other vegetation
Bald Eagle- The bald eagle in the national bird of the United States. It can grow to great size weighing up to twelve pounds. Their wing span can be up to two meters (seven feet). They can make a nest just about anywhere; up in a tree or down on the ground. Sometimes they even make nest on the side of a mountain. They have excellent vision witch makes them great hunters. They are a bird of prey, often feeding on small fish. They span over much of the taiga,but about eighty percent of them live in Alaska.
Bobcat- The bobcat lives in the woods of the taiga. They can grow to be two feet long and weighing up to twenty pounds. They use their sharp teeth and claws to devour whatever it wants. They will mainly eat small mammals like mice and squirrels, but have been known to get small game birds when they are on the ground. They can reach speeds of up to thirty miles an hour. Not your average kitty cat is it?
River Otter- The river otter can be found in the wooded lakes and streams in the taiga. The will grow up to thirty inches long with a tail up to eighteen inches. They mainly eat small fish. The are nocturnal predators they only hunt in the evening and night. But also are prey often getting eaten by fox and wolves.
Plants
Eastern Fir- This evergreen tree can grow between forty and eighty feet tall. It has short, spiny needles and can be found all across Canada. Some uses for this tree is Christmas trees, cabin logs, and pulp wood.
Paper Birch- This tree grows in clumps. It can be found all in taiga. They usually top out around forty feet tall at the most.
Siberian Spruce- This evergreen tree is on if the most beautiful trees around. Often times they reach heights over one hundred feet tall. They are found in the taiga of Siberia.
Douglas Fir- The Douglas fir is a monster. It will grow to be sixty feet tall and twenty feet wide. Because of its massive size they are usually used for lumber. The needles of these trees are also often used for tea.
